And Trot....
This oil pastel portrait is of a young girl
trotting at a horse show was a new experiment. While the
artist often does her portraits with just a plan background,
this scene created a small problem, namely the rider's coat was
nearly black, but the horse was white. Since oil pastels
were chosen as the medium, and since they require a gessoed
surface (to protect the paper from oil damage), the paper was
first gessoed and then acrylic paints were used to create an
abstract background which complimented the picture's
colors. Finally, oil pastels were then used to complete
the portrait.
