Drawing a Pencil Portrait

An artist's work on a pencil portrait can be divided up into 4 major steps:

  1. Preliminary Step -- This is where issues such as the general layout (vertical or horizontal) or special things to include/exclude are thought about.
  2. Enlarging and Transferring the Drawing -- In this step, the image from the photo is enlarged to an intermediate piece of paper and then is transferred to the final paper.
  3. Drawing -- This is exactly what it sounds like, namely, drawing of the portrait.
  4. Final Touches -- In this step, any corrections are made before the portrait is declared finished and is signed.

Comments by L.M. Hornberger

"Doing a pencil portrait really tests my skills as an artist.  There's no color to hide behind, so either I get the shapes and shadows right, or I don't.  But this is part of the fun!

"I have tried my best in this demonstration to explain what I am doing and why.  I hope I have succeeded, but if there are any questions, I would be glad to explain things further."
