Procedure for Commissioning a Portrait
People are sometimes confused or a bit timid about
commissioning a portrait. After having done over 250
commissions, L.M. Hornberger knows how to make the process easy and
painless. Basically, commissioning a portrait (or any other
piece of art) can be done in 5 easy steps.
Step 1: Decide on the Size and
Medium
After looking thru the various galleries, you
will have a good idea of which medium
you want -- whether you want a pastel or a pencil
portrait. With this in mind, you need to decide on the
size. Size is the major determining factor for the price
of the portrait. The prices for the most common sizes are
listed on the Prices
Page.
Step 2: Select a Photo
Next, you need to find a good photo for Ms.
Hornberger to work from. Some photo suggestions are on the FAQs
Page. Basically, a photo needs to be clear and (this
may sound funny) have the subject with an expression you
like. (While minor adjustments can be made, creating new
expressions is not possible.)
Step 3: Discuss Photo and Format
with Artist
After receiving the photo, the artist will
contact you with any problems. Also, you and the artist
will discuss what you want in the finished portrait, such
as background or not. Then, if there are significant
changes, Ms. Hornberger will send you (via email) a
'sketch' of the portrait.
Step 4: Let the Artist Work
Your part is basically done, so now it's the
artist's turn to do the work! Ms. Hornberger will tell you when
she plans to start
your portrait and give you an estimate of when it will be
finished. While working on it, she will send you an update
on the completion date and a report on how it's going.
Step 5: Approve Work and Wait for
Its Arrival
Once the artist is satisfied with the portrait,
she will
send you a scan of it for approval. If it's satisfactory
or there are only minor changes, she will then make any
corrections and mail you the finished portrait. (If there
are major problems, you and the artist will discuss it and she may redo the
portrait from the photo or may request you supply a different
photo.) Then you wait for the portrait to arrive and enjoy
it for the rest of your life!
Remember, each portrait comes with a 100%
satisfaction guarantee.
