Fine Art Drawing/Painting Media
As the initial installment in the Art Talks, it
is perhaps only fitting to discuss the various artistic media. (Yes,
it is media, plural, and medium, singular.) Some, such as oils or
pencil, are common, while others, such as silverpoint or casein, are not
so common.
Because there are about a dozen media that have
commonly been used for fine art drawing and painting, they have been
divided into 3 groups. The groups are:
- B&W Drawing Media
- Colored Drawing Media
- Painting Media
For each media, you will find:
a sample of it,
a brief history,
a list of necessary equipment,
some notes on how L.M. Hornberger uses it
Pros and Cons of it as a media
a few remarks by Ms. Hornberger
Additional comments and interesting facts can
be found along the left margin for some media. Please note: while
an attempt has been made to cover the main aspects of each media, this
discussion is not by any means comprehensive in terms of supplies or
working techniques. Only the materials and techniques that Ms.
Hornberger are familiar with are included.

The first section of media is the B&W drawing media, with pencil
being the first to be examined. To begin, click on next.
